We're Only Alive for A Short Amount of Time by David Cale, April 14th, 7PM
David Cale's autobiographical play with original songs about growing up in a highly volatile English home that violently exploded when his father murdered his mother. Caught in the middle of tragedy as a teenager and the sole witness in a nationally publicized murder trial which led to the imprisonment of his father, the play explores the mysterious question of why some people fall victim to their background and genetics and some people have a ferocious instinct to transcend.
For this reading of selections from the play David Cale will read all the parts.
David Cale is the writer and performer of ten solo works including Palomino (Kirk Douglas Theatre, K.C. Rep), A Likely Story (The New Group), Lillian (Goodman Studio Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, Obie Award) and Deep in a Dream of You (The Public Theater, Bessie Award). He wrote the book, lyrics, co-composed the music for and appeared as Floyd in Floyd and Clea Under the Western Sky (Goodman Theatre, Playwrights Horizons, Outer Critics Circle Nomination). His plays include Betwixt (The New Group) and Nightwear (Otrabanda Co.). He has written lyrics for songs sung by artists including Elvis Costello, Debbie Harry and Jimmy Scott. Most recently he composed the songs for 600 Highwaymen's Employee of the Year (2016 Under the Radar Festival, Public Theater, Crossing the Line FIAF, Mount Tremper Arts, Bessie Nomination).
