Each year from June through October, SPACE hosts over 200 artists, innovators and changemakers for 1-5 week residencies at Ryder Farm. SPACE provides structured time and space to create, in a natural setting away from day-to-day obligations and distractions. Residents come together for three communal meals daily, prepared from farm fresh ingredients by resident chefs, and share what they’ve been working on at the culmination of the week.
The season is comprised of the following programs:
The Working Farm - Offers 8 writers five nonconsecutive residency weeks on Ryder Farm during the course of the season, culminating with a full-length reading at Playwrights Horizons the following spring.
Family Residency - A partnership with the Lilly Awards, a weeklong residency for artist parents to work while SPACE team facilitates creative and nature-focused programming for their children.
Creative Residency - Flexible artist-directed residencies for up to two weeks, for artists and activists from a diverse range of disciplines.
Creative Solutions Symposium - A weeklong residency for activists and human rights organizations who are creatively addressing social justice issues.
Film Lab - New in 2017, the Film Lab invites early and mid-career filmmakers and their collaborators to the farm for one-on-one consultations with established industry professionals, artists, subject-matter experts and thought leaders.
Playwriting Mentorship Residency - Also new in 2017, a weeklong residency for promising emerging writers, mentored and led by Obie winner Adam Bock (A Life) and Mfoniso Udofia (Sojourners, Her Portmanteau).
Internship Program - Each season, SPACE invites 9-12 emerging artists and arts administrators to the farm for 6 to 8 week internships. Interns make vital contributions to SPACE’s daily operations while learning the skills and forging the relationships needed to succeed in their careers.
Institutional Residency - Welcomes teams of 2-12 to advance internal development, strategic planning, and special projects.
For the 2017 season, SPACE received over 800 applications representing 2500 individuals, more than double what we received in 2016. Please raise your paddle at the Gala to help fund our 8th season of creative work on Ryder Farm!
