"SPACE at Ryder Farm is a one-of-a-kind opportunity. You're allowed to explore your creative work in whatever means you need while also fostering close relationships with the small group of other, focused artists. I would never have had the chance to focus on a project in the city the way I could on the farm. And the friendships I made during that week have continued and strengthened ever since. It's a blessing and a diamond in the rough."
- Anu Valia, Film Lab 2017
The Film Lab is currently by invitation only.
Launched in 2017, the Film Lab at SPACE brings together a diverse cohort of early and mid-career filmmakers for a fully-subsidized week-long residency at Ryder Farm. The residency provides filmmakers and their collaborators with a retreat-like atmosphere for dedicated time and space to research, write and develop new projects, while also fostering new connections and community-building between participants in the program.
SPACE provides residents with housing, unique workspaces and three farm fresh meals daily prepared by SPACE’s chefs-in-residence. All meals are communal, giving opportunity for in-depth conversation and discourse.
The Film Lab is led by curator Gina Duncan, Associate Vice President of Cinema at BAM. The inaugural Film Lab residents included Sundance Grand Jury Prize winner Janicza Bravo and her partner/collaborator actor and comedian Brett Gelman; independent filmmaker and Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award recipient James C. Strouse; writer/producer Julie Miller; writer, director, and visual effects artist Begonia Colomar; and Sundance Jury Award winner Anu Valia.

"One of the best things about being part of the Film Lab at SPACE for me was getting to know the fellow film residents. Working in indie film can be a lonely endeavor during the writing and development stages. Being in community with fellow screenwriters and filmmakers while developing new ideas created new paths into my own work that I never could have even imagined before taking part in the Lab. And I made a lot of new creative partnerships with some really talented people in the process!"
