This week is a quiet week, so fellow intern Julia and I headed off to the farm after breakfast to help Stella prepare for the Brewster Green Market tomorrow. One of the things that makes SPACE so special is that there’s a balance between the peace and quiet space for our residents to work, and the activity of the farm itself. It’s a productive sort of energy and it was a rare treat to be able to join in. We met Stella at the processing station, where the produce is washed and prepared for market. We sorted kale, lettuce, scallions and swiss chard - cutting the stems and cleaning the leaves. Once we were done there, we grabbed buckets, and headed over to the North Field to pick green beans. Green beans are grown close to the ground and they blend in with the rest of the plant - you have to go searching for them. Julia, Stella and I made our way down the rows, munching on some beans as harvested. It was certainly an hour well spent. We snapped beans off the vine, and just talked. What a joy it was to be in the sun, chatting with two wonderful humans about life -all the while filling up my bucket with green beans.
