Why is there an application fee?

There is a $18 fee to submit an application. The growing number of applications SPACE receives each year require many hours of staff time. Fees are used to process applications swiftly and efficiently.

How much do residencies cost?

All residencies are partially subsidized. Fees are based on an institution's operating budget. Additionally, residents cover their travel to and from the farm. A round-trip off peak ticket from Grand Central Terminal to Brewster Station is $28.00. Institutional Residency fees for 2017 are listed below. Please note that institutions with an operating budget of $350,000 or less will automatically be considered for a larger subsidy.

How large can my group be?

Groups can be anywhere from 1 to 12 participants.

How long can I stay?

Institutional residencies span one day to one week.

Can I request when my residency at SPACE will be?

There are many factors that affect the scheduling of residencies and unfortunately we cannot guarantee specific dates. If there are dates that you are unavailable please note them on your application.

What are the accommodations like?

There are two structures that house residents on Ryder Farm: The Sycamores and Kay Hall. The original Ryder Family homestead, The Sycamores, is a beautifully rustic house dating back to the eighteenth century. The second housing structure, Kay Hall was built in 1983. Both houses are equipped with several bathrooms with showers and working plumbing, hot water and beds with clean linens; but if you consider yourself squeamish in a camping, outdoors-style environment, SPACE may not be the right place for you.

Will I be sharing a room?

We try our best to give each resident a private bedroom during their time at SPACE, but please keep in mind when applying with a larger group that some residents will be sharing rooms.

What are the work spaces like?

SPACE has ample work spaces both indoors and out. There are writing desks in each bedroom and large workspaces scattered throughout the historic structures on the farm. There is a large stage in our barn, as well as an outdoor stage and acres and acres of farmland available for your use.

How far away from NYC is SPACE, and how do I get there?

Ryder Farm is approximately a one hour journey from midtown Manhattan. To get to the farm via Metro North, depart from Grand Central Terminal on the Harlem Line towards Southeast and exit the train in Brewster. Please note that you must be in one of the first train cars to depart the train in Brewster. Click HERE to see train schedules. A SPACE team member will pick you up at the station in Brewster and drive you to the farm (a 7 minute trip). If you have a car, you are welcome to drive yourself to the farm.

If you are traveling from somewhere outside of New York City, please contact Allyson Davis at for directions.

How does SPACE interact with Ryder Farm?

Residents are encouraged to participate in the daily operations of Ryder Farm. Since its founding, SPACE team members and resident artists have worked with the farm on the overall maintenance of its structures. If farming is of interest, residents have the opportunity to assist with harvesting and preparing the farm’s organic produce for market, assembling flower bouquets, and/or tilling the land.
