STATUS: full-time                SALARIED EXEMPT

LOCATION: NYC & Brewster, NY              REPORTS TO: Executive Director

SPACE on Ryder Farm, a non-profit artist residency program, seeks a full time Director of External Relations to work closely with key staff and consultants on high-level decision making for the rapidly growing organization. Reporting to the Executive Director, this full-time position is one of four senior staff positions. The Director of External Relations is responsible for leading SPACE’s fundraising and communications operations in partnership with the ED. The Director of External Relations works both in NYC and in Brewster, NY. 

SPACE’s annual operating budget of more than $700,000 (up from $560K in 2016 and $372K in 2015) is comprised of 80% contributed revenue. Duties include but are not limited to:

DEVELOPMENT - 45% of the role

  • Research and prepare all foundation, corporate and government grant proposals, and oversee grant administration and reporting (grant writer to be hired in 4th quarter of 2017)

  • Identify, cultivate, steward major gift prospects and support ED and board in their fundraising efforts

  • With ED, manage individual donor portfolios

  • Oversee, plan and implement annual fund campaigns, including mid-year appeal and end of year online giving campaign

  • With the Administrative Assistant’s support, manage donor database

  • Partner with the ED in cultivating and soliciting Board members; send Board pledge reminders, sit down with Board members for one one one meetings, etc.

  • With ED, plan and execute approximately ten special events annually, including the annual Gala

  • With the support of the Administrative Assistant, prepare fundraising reports for Board Meetings

  • Support ED and Board with donor, community and political relations

  • With ED, senior staff and key Board members, strategize future Capital Campaign needs and wants
     

COMMUNICATIONS AND MARKETING - 30% of the role

  • Build seasonal communications and marketing calendar

  • Work with ED on communications and marketing strategy and vision

  • Write and distribute press releases; lead communications and outreach with press outlets

 

OPERATIONS - 15% of the role

  • With ED, supervise Administrative Assistant (dual report structure). In the 4th Quarter of 2017 hire, train and then supervise Grant Writer

  • With Controller and Director of Operations build the annual budgets

  • Track expenses and revenue for department and reconcile monthly with Controller

 

STRATEGY - 10% of the role

  • With ED, key staff, contractors and Board, sets strategic course for SPACE

 

REQUIREMENTS

The ideal candidate will have 3-5 years of proven nonprofit fundraising experience from myriad sources, strong organizational and time management skills, management experience, acute attention to detail, and strong communication skills with internal team members and external contacts. Must be proficient with Google Suite. Experience and proficiency with Kindful fundraising software (or the equivalent), Squarespace, InDesign and Stripe donation software a plus.

 

MORE ABOUT THE POSITION

SPACE on Ryder Farm is an ‘all-hands-on-deck’ grassroots organization. The Director of External Relations should have a minimum of three years management and development experience, be dexterous, entrepreneurial and able and excited to lead in a multitude of ways. This is a full-time leadership position working out of both SPACE’s Manhattan and Brewster offices. During the season (June-October), a good deal of time will be spend in Brewster, NY (housing provided). Compensation is competitive. SPACE observes a semi-monthly payroll.
