What are your names and where are you from?
Sofia: I am Sofia Alvarez, I live in Brooklyn New York.
Dan: I’m Dan Tierney, I live in Los Angeles California.
What project are you working on here at SPACE?
Sofia: We are working on a musical adaptation of a children’s book by William Steig called Amos and Boris. It is about a mouse and a whale who become best friends when the whale saves the mouse from drowning.
Dan: They have a few ups and downs together, and ultimately…well, no I don’t want to give anything away.
How have you been spending your time at SPACE?
Sofia: Well because Dan lives in L.A. and I live in New York, we don’t have a lot of time to work on the show together. So a lot of what we’ve been doing here is sort of shaping the musical. When we’re apart we can work on bits and pieces and for me it’s been most helpful being here to put it all together and to be able to have in room collaboration as opposed to just talking every so often.
Dan: Being at SPACE has helped our geographical problem of working together.
Sofia: Even if we’re not sitting right next to each other, just being able to say like “Okay, let’s circle back on this in an hour and see how far we’ve gotten.” has been incredibly helpful.
Dan: Right. There’s only so much you can articulate in emails.Things get lost in translation quickly. Or even on the telephone, you lose focus.
Sofia: We need a certain amount of time separately to come back and have stuff to show the other, but then that in room time has been really useful.
Dan:I think for Fia, she needs a lot of time to focus on the script and I need time to sit and try different things with the music and mix things together.
What’s coming up next for you and your project?
Sofia: This project was a commission from South Coast Rep so we have a loose deadline from them for the first draft, and then we’ve applied for some workshops that we’re waiting to hear back on. So, I’d say our time here is about getting our draft into a spot where we’re ready to go forward and start workshopping it. We attached a director right before we came here, Shelley Butler is going to be working with us on it. So getting that first draft ready for her to give notes on and then waiting to see what the next step is.
If you were reincarnated as a farm animal, what farm animal would you be and why?
Dan: Are there any sloths around here? I’m just kidding, because sloths just hang around at the top of trees and they lay about all day and don’t do anything. And they’re cute. I would say I would like to be Sammie the Cat because he lives a very good life.
Sofia: I want to be one of the ducks.
