What are your names and where are you from?

Justin
I’m Justin Kuritzkes and I’m from Los Angeles

Celine
I’m Celine Song and I’m from Toronto.

What are you working on here at SPACE?

Justin
Together we are working on a musical set in Ancient Rome and apart we are working on our own plays.

Justin, you are also part of SPACE’s resident writer group The Working Farm, right?

Justin
Yes, I’m working on a new play that I started the last time I was here in June and I’ve been working on that steadily. That one is called Incest.

How have you been spending your time at SPACE?

Celine
We have been splitting the time. Half for the musical and half on our own. We’ve walked down to the lake and have taken pictures in front of the turkeys.

Justin
When you see them up close, it’s really scary.

What was the inspiration for your musical?

Celine
We thought that it was such a shame that even though there is so much theater in New York shows like Mama Mia and The Lion King are the only ones that are widely seen. And we were talking about how if we could do our work on something like that with that kind of budget and audience and scale that would be really exciting.

Do you guys have musical backgrounds?

Justin
Absolutely not.

How do you go about writing it?

Celine
We do know a lot about Brecht’s musicals (if you can call them musicals). We are very well acquainted with those. We’re trying to come up with a plan for the process especially since this is the first time we are working together!

How has that been?

Justin
So far so good! We came in wanting to develop an outline and a game plan and we were successful.

How has it been writing at SPACE?

Celine
I sleep better here. No one is expecting us to be anywhere so that’s useful.

Justin
In the city writing is a break from life and here life is a break from writing. It’s nice to be in that position. It’s the first time I’ve done something like The Working Farm where I had a lot of time in between my stays but it’s been great editing a play here that I had written the first draft of here because whenever I read the play it conjures up images of wherever I happened to write it. Being back here editing it has some nice closure.

What’s up next for you?

Celine
Spiritually? Professionally?

Either!

Celine
Professionally, I never know what is going to happen. I have a show coming up in April.

Justin
I’m working on a show at Humana for Louisville. I’m doing a short play there.

If you were to be reincarnated as a farm animal what would it be and why?

Celine
We were talking about this before. I know that Justin is a bird. Not sure what kind.

Justin
I’m not a turkey or a peacock. Maybe an owl? Celine would be a donkey or a horse. Have you ever heard the thing “You’re either a bird, a horse, or a muffin?”

I haven’t.

Justin
It’s pretty clear that I’m a bird, she’s a horse, so you’re the muffin.

It’s clear to everyone but the muffin.
